Paramedic Competition PinThe 2005 annual paramedic competition was won by the team from Stokes County EMS.  During the competition at Emergency Medicine Today in Greensboro they outscored the defending champions, Forsyth County EMS, as well as the other regional winners from Surry County EMS (2), New Hanover Regional EMS, and Dare County EMS.  The scenario that each team had to work with was

The Scenario

"A family, including an older couple, their daughter and granddaughter, has been camping out in a travel trailer for two days at a NASCAR event. The family is using a propane gas stove which is malfunctioning without their knowledge. The effects of CO poisoning are being felt to some degree by all family members. The grandmother and mother have taken a walk - reportedly "not feeling good". The grandfather and infant remain behind, sleeping in the trailer. The grandfather has a cardiac history and is reportedly feeling tired. A seemingly intoxicated neighbor has just knocked on door to ask if they have any extra beer. The grandfather answered the door with his unresponsive grandchild in his arms and fell out of trailer onto the ground. The neighbor freaked out and called 911 on his cell phone."

Scenario progression

"EMS dispatch is to "unknown medical". Due to the unknown nature of the call SHP, who is working traffic at the speedway, will be notified since they are close-by. An SHP motor unit and another officer will be on-scene just as EMS arrives. EMS arrives to find "drunk" getting in the way. Man and baby in arrest, however, baby gets pulses back with a few compressions and BVM w/ O2. Baby’s mother and grandmother will arrive back shortly and remain distraught, but uninvolved. The "drunk" bystander will keep getting in the way and threaten an SHP officer with a bottle of whiskey, which will result in him being arrested after a threat of force from the officers. The grandmother will decide to turn off everything in the camper before they leave and will enter the camper. She will cause a flash explosion trying to turn the malfunctioning stove off and run out the door. She has significant airway burns and will need aggressive airway management. SHP will extinguish trailer fire with hand extinguisher."

Congratulations to all the Winners!
